10 Habits that Improve Your Mental Health

I believe that your mental heath is just as important as your physical health. We usually neglect our mental health not knowing that there are many habits that can help improve or harm it. Let me share with you these 10 habits you can practice daily to boost your mood as well as mental health.

1. Get professional help

Even though mental health issues are very common in our society, many still find it difficult to seek professional help. Do visit your doctor when you start getting symptoms of mental health instability. Some of the symptoms include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Sleeplessness
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Persistent low mood

2. Regular exercise

Exercise is not only about your physical health. Exercising regularly has a lot of positive impact on anxiety, depression and more. It helps you to

3. Practice silence

Take a moment to clear out your mind to relieve the effects of anxiety and stress. Our minds do have exceptional powers and can be a liability at times. It necessary for us to develop habits that help purge out the things that threaten our mental state. You can do this through

4. Take care of your body

By taking care of your physical health, you are indirectly doing so for your mental health. Make sure you

5. Sleep well

Sleep is very essential for the brain to function well. Doctors have recommended practicing good “sleep hygiene” by using your bed room for sleep and nothing else. Sleeplessness is considered as one of the causes of mental health. You can cut down on your level of caffeine or increase your daytime physical activity if you have sleeping problems.

6. Avoid drugs and alcohol

Alcohol should be used at a minimum meanwhile you have to avoid drugs strictly. People ignorantly use alcohol and drugs to solve their mental health problems not knowing that it actually aggravates it.

7. Talk to people

If faced with a mental health issue, open up to someone. Suppressed feelings can easily lead to depression.

You can talk to friends or family about what you are going through. This can help de-stigmatise your feelings and an eye opener to the perspective of others in addition to what might be going on in their lives. Don’t try to fight alone.

8. Laughter heals

Laughter, they say is the best medicine. Laughing will help to ease out the effects of a depressed and anxious mind. Just like exercise, research has shown that laughter helps boost your mood. It also helps in bonding with others.

People love those who smile or laugh always. Look for where there’s fun – it may be a funny movie, stand-up comedy or just checking on funny videos on YouTube. There are thousands of funny videos there which you can use it to laugh out the stress.

9. Avoid procrastinating

Procrastination is a killer of dreams that needs to be avoided by all cost. It also comes in with stress-inducing habits which can create a lot of havoc to your mental state. Always go for a would-do list instead of a to-do list because it will help you a lot. This list will enable you to stay on track and will lesser the mental effort of trying to remember everything.

10. Take a break from social media

Social media is just so addictive and many times, it has been what causes people to procrastinate.

It may seem as if it is a convenient way to keep in touch with people, yet it has some negative effects on your mental state. I will advise you make more efforts in socialising in person than doing so online. Go offline and make sure you limit the use of social media to a few hours a week.
