Motherhood alone is a full-time job before you even think of getting another job to add on it. It is first of all not easy to be a mother – and this pandemic is making things more difficult for everyone. A mother is responsible for the upbringing and nurturing of her kids and she can be very protective too. Raising children is a blessing but due to the need for additional income, more and more mothers juggle between home and work duties. Below, I will share with you certain things only working mums will understand.

1. It all starts with pregnancy

I am not even talking about the joys of being pregnant. I am talking about a child-friendly employer or colleagues. Many pregnant women find it difficult to break the news of their pregnancy at their place of work. They doubt how well it’s going to be received. She suffers from the fears of how it will affect her career advancement. She thinks of how her colleagues will have to adjust their work to meet up her maternity leave.

2. Maternity leave – keeping in touch with work

I had to keep in touch with the office during my maternity leave. I will check and respond to emails especially during the final stages of my leave. Luckily my mum was around to help me with the baby.

3. Time with their kids is of great value

Only working mums will understand how valuable the little time they spend with their children is. The fun is that society criticises them for not having enough time with their kids. However, they are not very different from non-working mothers since children go to school anyway.

The little time a working mum has with her kids is highly maximized. She does their homework, cooks for them, does their laundry and so on. These are the things all mothers do for kids, and working mums do also. Then she still has her job to take care of.

4. Have very little time for themselves

Most employers believe that working mums will have problems because of their children. It is so sad to hear how some employers think that a mother won’t have enough time to cope with work and bringing up her children. They forget to know that all mums wish they have time away from their children during the day while navigating the lockdown and this pandemic.

5. The hugs

Hugs and love are the fringe benefits of a working mum. No matter all the stress you have during the day, getting the hugs from your children is the most rewarding gift of all times. The smiles and joy when you open the door even when you’ve just been to the corner shop to get some milk – I long for it every single day.
