Today’s article is a continuation of Jane’s story. She will be highlighting the fact that ‘some change won’t harm’. It might be a good idea to glance through the first episode to get a feel of some of the issues raised by her.

EPISODE 2: Some Change Won’t Harm

Present

 Jane waited for the elevator doors to open. On top of her head, she could see the red numbers lighting up, indicating which floor was next. She breathed in and out.

 “You got this, you got this.” 

 The doors opened and she stepped inside, just in time for Clarisse, who worked as a corporate assistant, to get in. She practically hugged Jane when the doors closed.

 “I heard the news!” She screamed with excitement.

“Is not official…” Jane looked down at the floor.

 “Are you kidding me, who else could get this job if not you? There would be silly to not give you this promotion.”

 “They are also considering Tod and Steve.” Jane didn’t want to show her fears to Clarisse, but they were friends.

 Clarisse laughed, “Those jerks!? They can’t even write an email without an auto corrector.” 

 “Well… They did persuade the entire office last time…” and they have also been here the longest and are….”

 Jane shook her head.

 “Men?” Clarisse finished for her. She grabbed Jane’s hands and looked deep into her eyes. “You got this Jane.”

 The elevator doors opened on their floor, Karen the receptionist, greeting them with a knowing smile.

“I think they are planning to fire me,” Karen closed her eyes tightly as if she was holding back her tears.

Jane’s hand reached Karen’s, she was trying to comfort her friend the best way she could. But knew that no matter what she said her words would be meaningless. Karen didn’t want her pity. She had asked Jane to meet her after work because she wanted her help.  

But Jane didn’t know how to help Karen. She knew Karen was the best at her work and was always taking extras tasks in order to impress her superiors.

Sadly, Jane was in no position of power to make sure she received the proper praise for all her effort just as no one else from the office ever paid enough attention to hers, however… 

Jane let out a sigh. 

Sometimes being so positive felt like a weight on her chest, but she was not the one to back down or leave others behind. 

“Julia assigned me to work on the new gathering and to also set up a party for future partners, and she did mention I could request help from someone…”  

A little sigh of relief came out from Karen, she quickly covered her mouth and looked around the cafe where they were sitting. Just one of the waitresses gave them some weird looks.  

“If anyone knows how to plan and organise it’s you, Karen. It won’t be easy and we have to get all this done by the end of the month, meaning we only have two weeks.”

Jane said, knowing fully well that her work could also be in the line if things went wrong. 

Karen’s eyes lit up with ideas.

“Two weeks, that’s more than enough. I already know which place we can contact for the catering and how to arrange the seating to make sure no arguments happen during the party.”

Karen pulled out her planner. She had one of those big black leather ones, perfectly organised and separated in each category.

Jane smiled, knowing she had made the right decision. 

The next two weeks Jane and Karen worked side by side to get everything ready. They would say good morning and goodnight to each other every day, they even came up with keywords to communicate, they could exchange looks and know exactly what the other one had in mind.

Saying they were synchronized fell short.

They were fast and efficient. Getting all the calls set up, checking and rechecking everything. No mistakes were allowed by them, every detailed was scrutinized to the highest standards ever.

Once they were done and the big day arrived Jane and Karen were praised for their hard work, some of the female co-workers even did a silent toast for them.

Towards the end of the event, Jane saw Karen standing aside with their bosses, for a moment she felt scared for her friend but then she saw the big smile and laugh knew everything was fine. 

They had saved the day together.
